Returning from a frenetic week in Vegas, and having had to realise a few truths I was desperately trying to ignore, I have set myself some new goals. In the next 2 months or so, I intend to find a reason to stay in New York City.
I feel like I really haven't given the city much of a chance up to this point. I have been comfortable staying inside my little IS haven and now I need to be proactive and a little brave and take some steps outside of my comfort zone. In that spirit I attended a birthday party of a friend of a friend on Friday. About an hour into the event, my friend sojourned to another event and I was left to take care of myself amongst a crowd of people that didn't want to talk about Mike Lynn and what a mess Cisco made. But they were a really interesting bunch of people. I met quite a few PR people, that being the common theme, but also an actor, someone in insurance something and someone else who did... I don't quite remember. The best thing about the night was that it was fun. I enjoyed myself and I will definitely make the effort again.
With the same intent in mind, I have also signed up for nycares.org. An organisation that makes it easy for individuals to volunteer in the city. I am going to a one hour orientation on Tuesday after work and then I can choose from a variety of different one off volunteering opportunities until I find something that works for me, at which point can make a bigger commitment, if thats what I want. I have been meaning to do something like this for a while and this group make it very easy.
So. I am 2 steps on my road and feeling upbeat about it.
