Last night I went to see Sylvie Guillem and Russell Maliphant dance in 'Push' in NY City Center. Sylvie is the most perfect dancer I have ever seen. She has legs and feet that simply mesmorise me. Her grace and fluidity completely belie her incredible strength and flexibility. It seems that she has the kind of body that can literally do anything she could ask of it and it's no longer a case of whether or not she can perform what is asked of her, but what should she perform. Her beginnings were with L'Opera de Paris where she became an etoile at the tender age of 19 under Nureyev's guidance. She performed the most technically difficult roles with seeming ease. Now she has moved away from Classical Ballet to more modern ballet but what has not changed is her ability to demonstrate her perfect form, her exactness of movement, her perfection. You can't help but imagine that this must have been exactly what Maliphant wanted when he choreographed the piece. I was speechless, breathless for much of the performance, willing it not to end. I could watch her forever.
This week has been a tough one in work, with lots of deadlines and pressure and stress. Last night's performance was a perfect remedy.
